Not Even Past

Janet Davis on the History of Dog-Eating in the U.S.

Our colleague in the American Studies department at UT, Janet Davis, has an op-ed in today’s New York Times, entitled “The Dog Ate My Birth Certificate.” Davis offers historical background on the responses to President Obama’s reference to his own eating of dog meat when growing up in Indonesia. She points out that, historically, many of the concerns over eating meat had less to do with animal welfare or human health and more to do with the politics of ethnic differences.
